Exam Changes The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) recently announced that ARE 4.0 will be offered beginning July 2008. According to NCARB, ARE 4.0 will be more subject-oriented than the current ARE 3.1, and is intended to better assess a candidate's ability to approach design projects. The new format combines the multiple choice and graphic portions of different divisions, reducing the number of divisions from nine to seven.
Key Transition Dates The transition will be gradual with a one-year overlap, during which both ARE 3.1 and ARE 4.0 will be administered. Provided you pass at least one ARE 3.1 division prior to May 2008, you can continue to take ARE 3.1 divisions until July 2009.
If you have not passed all ARE 3.1 divisions by June 2009, you will be transitioned to the ARE 4.0 format. Depending on which ARE 3.1 divisions you have passed, you will be given credit for the corresponding ARE 4.0 divisions. In order to avoid being retested on subjects you have already passed, you should develop a strategy for which divisions you take in which order.
Kaplan ARE Preparation Materials
Kaplan AEC Education is mirroring NCARB's gradual transition to ARE 4.0. Kaplan’s new ARE 4.0 Learning Systems are now available. We will continue to offer division-specific Learning Systems for ARE 3.1 divisions until June 2009, when the ARE 3.1 format is discontinued. Regardless of which strategy you employ to pass the ARE, Kaplan AEC Education will be able to help you prepare.

Transition Tips You can start or continue taking divisions in ARE 3.1, because they transfer for credit in ARE 4.0. See the transition tips and chart below to minimize retaking subjects you already passed in ARE 4.0.
- Building Technology is a key division in the transition because its vignettes will be dispersed across four ARE 4.0 divisions. So be sure to pass Building Technology if you have passed and want credit for any of the following ARE 3.1 divisions: Building Design/Materials & Methods; Construction Documents & Services; General Structures; Lateral Forces; or Mechanical & Electrical Systems.
- Pre-Design and Site Planning content will be shuffled in ARE 4.0: if you pass one, pass the other.
- General Structures, Lateral Forces and the Structural Layout vignette from Building Technology are being combined into the Structural Systems. If you pass any of these and want to avoid being retested on material you have already seen, pass all three.

ARE Transition Chart The chart below shows which ARE 4.0 division(s) you will need to take if you do not pass a specific ARE 3.1 division. It is a useful tool to help you create an exam strategy that maximizes the number of divisions that transfer to ARE 4.0 if you are unable to finish all divisions in 3.1.
